Creed Because it was the desire of our founders that The Union Church would welcome worshippers from various theological backgrounds, we are not formally affiliated with any particular denomination. Our church does, however, practice a Christian spirituality that is rooted deeply in history, scripture, and experience. For instance, when we celebrate communion we affirm together The Apostle’s Creed, one of the earliest statements of faith known to the church. We focus on the life and teaching of Jesus and try to apply his words to our lives. And through the power of God's spirit we experience the joy of forgiveness and the power of personal transformation. Another guiding principle at The Union Church is the advice of St. Augustine who said: “In essentials unity, in nonessentials diversity, in all things charity.”
Baptism We believe that baptism is an outward sign of God’s mercy and grace, a grace that is not just limited to adults who can express their faith verbally, but is inclusive of children who cannot. The baptism of children witnesses to the truth that God's love claims us before we are even able to respond. Titus 3:5 says: “God saves us, not because of any works of righteousness that we do, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.” Therefore, we recognize and practice both adult and infant baptism.
Communion At the last meal that Jesus shared with his disciples, he told them to remember his life of sacrifice when they shared bread and wine. The Union Church of Seaside Park celebrates an open communion. Our interdenominational heritage allows us to share the bread and cup with all who follow Jesus as Lord. We celebrate the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday of every month.
